Desmond can exploit this fear of mirrors to get through the level and confront her. This ghost-like figure haunts a ravaged Homa-Mart superstore, hides her face behind a mask, and becomes enraged when Desmond looks at her. Her monster, “ The Watcher”, is a medusa inspired manifestation of her social anxiety and shame. Virginia then admits that her mother forced her to attend the pageant anyway- despite her face being visibly injured. She then goes on to give Desmond more information about the incident which disfigured her explaining that she had been practicing for one such pageant with her mother's makeup when she slipped and instinctively reached for the large bathroom mirror, which then collapsed on top of her, causing it to shatter. ![]() She refers to the beauty pageants unfavorably, using the term, " Little Miss Whatever-The-Hell". In her later sessions, Virginia, almost understandably, blames her mother for her anxiety disorder. It is implied through Allen Shore's notes that he may have witnessed this. In response to this, Desmond suggests she use this as an opportunity to help confront her anxiety. Virginia expresses distress at this, insisting she won't shop there, but also refusing alternatives outside of Milton-Haven, claiming that any farther would be much too far out of her comfort zone. The store was then replaced by Homa-mart, a much larger chain store. Therapy with Desmond began as a mandatory disciplinary measure after college roommates complained that she refused to leave the dorm, or take care of herself.ĭuring her first taped sessions, Virginia expresses anger at the fact, " Eden's Grove", a local store, has closed. This ended after an incident in which a bathroom mirror collapsed on top of a young Virginia, resulting in her face being permanently disfigured.
